White Rust: death of a tower or an illness you can live with?
Typically, white rust appears suddenly and progresses rapidly over the wetted, galvanized steel components in the cooling tower or condenser. If the white rust is not corrected, it may lead to premature failure of the galvanized coating.
White rust can be prevented with the proper water treatment program, but it is important that the proper precautions are taken when a tower first becomes operational. Your water treatment specialist should be familiar with your local water conditions and the materials in your tower & cooling system
There’s water treatment programs available that do not require chemicals and can still provide excellent zinc corrosion inhibition.
